Leesburg, Historic Downtown

Downtown Businesses
Leesburg was established in 1758 at the crossroads of the major north-south Carolina Road (now U.S. Highway 15) and the east-west oriented Potomac Ridge Road (now Virginia Highway 7) and is the seat of government for Loudoun County established in 1757.

The town's rich history spans three centuries. The old downtown buildings reflect the early years in Leesburg’s history. Come visit and see this quaint town just 45 miles from Washington, DC and 14 miles from Dulles Airport.

Copper Beech Tree

The large, handsome shade tree dominating the 3 Writ Street lot is a Copper Beech tree (Fagus sylvatica Purpurea). It is a slow growing deciduous tree of a magnificent size.
It begins the year leafing a little late, starting with dark red-purple glossy leaves, later turning a bronzy green in the early autumn. It is of an impressive size with smooth silver-gray bark and a short wide trunk. It may attain ages of 200-400 years and  can reach a height of 50-60 feet with a spread of 40 to 50 feet. These long branches often droop down to the ground.

Copper Beech is an overall name for all cultivars of the European Beech with reddish to purple leaves. This color is due to high anthocyanin levels in the tissues, the same plant pigment responsible for the purplish color of many fruits and vegetables. Beech trees belong to the same family as oak trees and grow in all but Africa and southern Asia.
We are sure you will agree that this is magnificent tree in all four seasons.

Loudoun Clerk of Courts

Loudoun was one of the first countries which enabled you to complete your marriage application on line, prior to visiting the Courthouse.

Once you both arrive together with valid state or government photo identifications (i.e. valid driver’s license, passport or military identification) and a fee of $30 cash, it will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to receive your marriage license. Marriage licenses are issued Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You should plan to arrive in our office by 3:30 p.m. to allow sufficient time for the Clerk’s staff to prepare your marriage license.

You may complete your application prior to arriving at the Loudoun County Clerk’s office by clicking on this link: Marriage License Application.

Loudoun County was formed in 1757 from a branch of Fairfax County.

Loudoun County is named after John Campbell, who was the Fourth Earl of Loudoun and a Scottish nobleman. Campbell, at the time, was the titular governor of Virginia, from 1756-1758, and a former Commander in Chief of the British armed forces in Virginia.

Most of Leesburg was founded on the property of Nicholas Minor, who petitioned the General Assembly for the construction of a town on his land. Originally named Georgetown after King George I of England, the town’s name was later patriotically changed to Leesburg, in honor of Francis Lightfoot Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. This name change was an excellent way for Leesburg to show its faith and support of our newly founded country.

Opening Show

Last summer, Weddings on Wirt Street had two openings: the first was for the community, wedding officiants, and the Courthouse staff; and, the second, for fellow business owners, neighbors and friends.

We want to thank the Town of Leesburg and Loudoun County for a successful Ribbon Cutting on August 31st, 2010.

Town Council Member Marty Martinez cut the ribbon and County Supervisor Kelly Burk presented us with a plaque honoring the opening of the business.

We are grateful for the support shown us.

Everyone joining us for these events had a grand time.
